Last week I mentioned how I see bullying as a way that some students show they are unruly. Bullying has become an increasing issue in our schools. When I was a kid, bullying was when someone who picked on me or physically abused me, but today many students experience all kinds of bullying. The three main types of bullying are
verbal, physical, and relational. These are explained in the previous link. One most up and coming type of bullying is happening on the internet. Since I am elementary teacher I do not see a lot of this, but I am sure in middle school and high school that there is some. I would like to hear some of the policies that some schools have on "cyber bullying."
In my school we have gone to great lengths to discuss bullying in today's schools. Most of it has been in discussion with our students, but we have also had the
TIGER program from Plymouth State University come talk to our students. I hope all of this intervention helps our students, but I am not always with my students to monitor what they are doing and if they are making good choices. Here are some websites that might help you discuss bullying with your students:
Here are some books about bullying:

ReplyDeleteThis is a link to another great resource. Julia is/was a school counselor and she write in kid language. The books are simple but get very much to the point! My favorite book by her is I am a Booger so Treat Me With Respect. It is about nose picking! It is hilarious but really teaches a lesson. She has activities books to go with most of her books. Bulling is such a huge issue but on the other hand I think we are also need to promote self-confidence as well as how to prevent bulling.
Dave,
ReplyDeleteThis post is timely since we in NH are dealing with bullying laws. With all the new technology, there are so many ways people can bully. It's ashame that with all the good technology brings...we also have the bad.
Charisse,
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is a big thing in NH right now. I am seeing a great increase in bullying everyday in our school. (Now, I say this with great respect especially where I am not a parent), but I do feel some of the problems stem with the parents who are not taking responsible for their child's behaviors, at least in the elementary level.
